Okee the Octopus offers an engaging approach to familiarizing children with the world of medical imaging.
Visiting a hospital for radiological procedures can be a daunting experience, particularly for first-time patients. This application aims to alleviate some of that anxiety by guiding young users through an interactive journey with Okee the Octopus and his friends. Their playful activities not only prepare children for their upcoming appointments but also foster a sense of curiosity and confidence, making the experience more approachable—even enjoyable—for those who may not need imaging themselves.
The program comprises three training games designed to teach essential skills in a fun, interactive manner:
- Breath-holding techniques demonstrated through Puffer
- Maintaining stillness showcased with Jellyfish
- Assisting Squid in filling up with glow-in-the-dark ink
Following the training, children can participate in six simulated imaging adventures, such as:
- Building submarines in MRI
- Crafting milkshakes during Fluoroscopy
- Locating stickers within a CT scan simulation
- Identifying broken bones in X-ray images
- Searching for sea stars in Ultrasound scans
- Fastening seatbelts before a simulated ride in Nuclear Medicine
Complementing the interactive content are real-life videos and photographs that depict actual procedures at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne. These materials provide valuable insights into what children can expect during their imaging appointments, along with practical pre-visit tips aimed at reducing apprehension.
The app also includes useful information for parents, such as contact details, parking guidance, and frequently asked questions, helping families prepare effectively for hospital visits.
This resource was developed collaboratively by the Departments of Medical Imaging, Educational Play Therapy, and the Educational Resource Centre at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, in partnership with Conduct digital agency.
